The composer, performer and musician
If you ever want to watch one man
perform out of a list ranging from chartbusters of pop-rock legends
Bryan Adams, Lionel Richie, Billy Joel, Kenny Logins, Deep Purple
etc. to Hindi super hits of Bollywood, old and new, as well as
numerous original compositions in 3 languages, English, Hindi and
Bengali…watch Rajesh Roy, accompanying himself with the piano or the
guitar – or along with a live band.
Born (11th April 1971) and
brought up in Kolkata, Rajesh Roy always had a very musical
atmosphere dominating his childhood. His father and aunt being
extremely talented and renowned names in music, and his mother in
writing lyrics in both English and Bengali, it was almost inevitable
for Roy to start playing the piano at the tender age of four.
Between 1978 and 1992 Rajesh Roy was
a name everyone found to be synonymous with rocking audiences of all
tastes in Kolkata. His live performances, both as a solo artiste as
well as along with his back up band, DUSK, had become a much
talked about issue for a long time. That was till he left for Mumbai
in 1993.
He has since then established himself
as a considerably popular music composer / performer in three
languages - Hindi, Bengali and English. Roy has performed all over
India, in the Middle East and in various parts of the USA. In fact,
in the year 2000, he was honored with a citation for excellence in
performance by none other than Brett Schundler, the ex mayor of
Jersey City, NJ.
Roy has scored the music for two very popular recent Hindi feature
films directed by Kushan Nandy (son of the renowned
Pritish Nandy), namely “88 Antop Hill” (2003) and “Humdum”
(2005), other than several others which are yet to release. Roy’s
music played a vital role in Gautam & Poushali Benegal’s
animation film, “The Pink Camel” (2000), bagging three
national awards.
Other than films he has scored for numerous TV commercials and
serials / programmes, albums, corporate documentaries etc. In fact
one of his first TV serials “Hum Bombai Nahin Jayenge”,
directed by Tigmanshu Dhulia of “Haasil” and
“Charas” fame, was nominated for the
Onida Pinnacle Awards 1994.
