AWARDS

Grants, awards and citations:

Rimli is the recipient of several grants and awards including a Folk Arts Apprenticeship grant from the NJSCA (New Jersey State Council on the Arts). She has also received several citations from the Mayor of Jersey City and from HCOCHA (Hudson County Office of Cultural and Heritage Affairs) for her work. Her organisation has also received several grants from HCOCHA and NJSCA.

Oher than that

She has worked as dance coordinator for Zee TV, a leading television channel, auditioning and selecting talented dancers from all over the country for competitive dance shows on TV. Rimli is also a talented pianist (having completed Grade Six in pianoforte from the Trinity College of Music, London) and singer (is an All India Radio artiste) herself. The dance doyenne seeks to pass along this rich background to her pupils at Surati.

Mission

Rimli, through Surati, is also actively involved in promoting talented Indian artists. She seeks to educate people about Indian culture and propagate amongst Indian youth living in the USA, an awareness of their own cultural heritage. Rimli also aspires to educate people about Indian dance forms that are not native to their state. For this, Rimli wants to popularize the lesser-known Manipuri, Kuchipudi, Mohiniattam and Odissi forms of Indian Classical dance - which though less publicized in comparison to Bharatnatyam or Kathak, are extremely rich and graceful dance forms.
