ABOUT RIMLI ROY

Rimli Roy, noted dancer and choreographer, began to take her first formal lessons in Indian Classical dancing at the tender age of four. Having a tremendous innate sense of rhythm and natural grace of movement, Rimli gradually began to master the above-mentioned genres of Indian classical dance and soon started to give stage performances, her first being at the age of six.

INDIAN CLASSICAL DANCE
Manipuri under Khelendra Mukhopadhyay (a disciple of Guru Bipin Singh) and later under the Jhaveri sisters, Ranjana Jhaveri and Padmashree Darshana Jhaveri
Odissi under the illustrious Guru Giridhari Nayak, who in his turn is a leading disciple of the legendary Kelucharan Mahapatra.

Bharatnatyam under the renowned dancer and teacher Purnima Ghosh.

CREATIVITY

Other than Indian classical dance forms Rimli also experiments with folk dances and dance forms of Tagore music, as well as a fusion of the three above-mentioned genres of Indian Classical dance and has choreographed group dances for major stage and TV programs. A daringly innovative artiste, Rimli has done a lot of work on creative dancing and improvisation, venturing outside the conservative domain of set classical dance forms. Her creativity found final expression in Surati, a performing arts academy based in New Jersey, that she founded in 2002. As director and instructor, she teaches Bharatnatyam, Odissi, Manipuri, folk, contemporary and other creative dance forms.
